Ministry of sound- Initial ideas

I have been thinking about the different ways and about the different places I could advertise the Ministry of sound logo. I would like to place it somewhere in London, as this is where the Ministry of sound nightclub is, and also is a place where the most people will see it. I have looked at the different famous London places and buildings that I could place the Ministry of sound logo, my initial idea is that the logo could be lit up in the middle of the London Eye at night time, with flashing lights...

Becks- Fusions Video

I have been researching the artists that are a part of Becks Fusions to find out what kind of music they play and what the live experience is like. This is one of the bands features on the Becks website Santogold - Lights Out (Live @ Becks Fusions 2008).

This is Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy - (Live @ Becks Fusions 08).

Calvin Harris (Live @ Becks Fusions 07).

I have also found Becks Fusions Animations.

Ministry Of Sound- Comparative Research

Creamfields has established itself as the crown jewel of dance festivals and continues to be in the Top 5 festivals in the UK alongside the likes of Glastonbury, V and Reading. Beginning life in Winchester in 1998, and the following year relocating to Liverpool, 2006 saw the festival move its new home amongst the rolling hills and meadows of Daresbury in Halton (25 mins from Liverpool).
It set out to provide the clubbing world with a bespoke large scale outdoor event and has gone on to become the most popular and renowned open air electronic music festival in the world attracting over 40,000 people every August Bank Holiday weekend. Creamfields is famous for many things but essentially for bringing together genre breaking pioneers from across the dj and live music spectrum. The structure of the 15 hour festival features the enormously successful Live Outdoor Stage and between 8-10 DJ only arenas, the fresh and unique character which in the past has featured a celebrity beach football tournament and first ever festival swimming pool and spa are all key to its success.
Creamfields is the only festival concept that has been successfully exploited on the global market. In June 2000 Creamfields Ireland was launched, with Creamfields Argentina not far behind. To date Creamfields has been staged in over 15 countries including Spain, Chile, Brazil, Ireland, Mexico, Poland, Czech Republic, Portugal and Argentina which attracts over 60,000 people alone and has become THE biggest electronic music festival in Latin America.

Becks- Ideas

This typography tree looks like it could be a bottle with the contents exploding out of the top. I like the idea of having the typography inside the bottle making the bottle shape, and also flooding out of the top of the bottle, maybe containing music vectors of the same color joining with the type...?
Or maybe the typography surrounding pictures of the bands involved in Becks Fusions...? (a bit like this coke illustration)

Becks- Bottle Ideas

I have found an image that I like of a pint of beer made up of typography, this has given me the idea to experiment with the graphics on the bottle. I like the style of the limited edition bottles by coca cola.

I have experimented in Photoshop with typography to see how it would look.

I have also experimented with the Becks and Fusions logos.

I have used typography inside of the bottle shape telling the consumer some of the bands involved in Becks Fusions using the specified colors of Becks, also I have experimented using pictures of the bands.

Becks- Fusions Musicians

I have been researching the type of music artisits that are involved in Becks Fusions. Massive Attack, Hercules, Love Affair, The Presets, Sonny J, Elektrons, Midnight Jaggernaunts, Das Pop, Santogold, Phantom Limb, Mechanical Owl, Tokyoblu and many more. All artists play a range of different genres of music such as, dance music, electric soul, indie-dance, pop music, 60s southern soul and Latin-edged vibes to funk and rock.

Becks- Initial Ideas

I have found some 'coke side of life' music illustrations from the art remix gallery, I am panning to do some more sketches in this style for becks, with the music illustations surrounding the bottle.

I have used the idea of music wires from the Fusions website and have made a quick colored sketch of them exploding out of the top of the bottle with the names of some of the artists that are involved in Becks Fusions.

Becks- Illustration Ideas

I have found a illustration/ collage idea for a foreign beer Brahma. Also I have found some packaging ideas for Brahma beer which uses illustration and the bottle on the outside carboard packaging which is like the initial ideas I have thought about for my packaging design.

Ministry of sound- Initial Ideas

I have been researching different ways how the Ministrty of sound logo can be applied to different environments and media spaces with a edgy Urban vibe. I have thought about projecting the logo on big buildings in London near the Ministry of sound clubs at nighttime. I have found a company called Projection Advertising, who provides light projection solutions to a wide range of clients across the UK and abroad. They use the latest technology to create the brightest, most engaging projections to guarantee an event or campaign is a real success. Projection Advertising provides light projection solutions to a wide range of clients across the UK and abroad. They use the latest technology to create the brightest, most engaging projections to guarantee an event or campaign is a real success.

Also I have found Guerrilla Projection Media Advertising - Wallspace Media video on Projection.

Critical Analysis- Ministry of sound

I started my research finding out all about Ministry of sound's background, it was first officially opened 21st September 1991 founded by Jamie Palumbo, it set itself apart from other London nightclubs of the time having a non-alcoholic bar with a 24 hour license, designed to attract an enthusiastic crowd of music lovers. The clubs name and logo are in the style of executive branches of UK government (such as Ministry of Defense) and based on the portcullis and crown. Ministry of sound are not only a music brand they also have their own clothing range, nightclubs, CD compilations, record label, vodka brand, radio channel, workout videos and perfume range.

For comparative research I have been looking at Creamfields, which is a well known major UK dance festival and started in 1998. I have been comparing there websites and there styles, Creamfields also have their own clothing range like Ministry of sounds. Also I've found out about the big London nightclubs and researched their websites to compare them to Ministry of sound. I've also collected a range of the Ministry of sound CD covers to get a feel for their style, each focus on the Ministry of sound logo, some are very simple but bright and eye catching whereas others are very vivid and use digital imagery.

I have found some past pictures that I have taken of New York City Times Square that reminded me of the Ministry of sound scene with the bright lights and big city buildings with flashing advertisements around the buildings which I plan to use in my initial ideas. The Nike iD Reuters sign advertising campaign is also seen regularly in Times Square. I have been looking at music and dance vectors that have interested me, and I have sketched some of my own ideas of the Ministry of sound logo surrounded by music vector graphics and city scapes.

I have used Youtube to look at all of Ministry of sounds television CD advertisements, and have found that Ministry of sound also have their own Youtube site (www.youtube.com/user/ministryofsounduk?blend=1). All of there advertisements have something in common, they all use bright colours, vector graphics, flashing imagery and most dancing girls. I am planning to get some stills from the videos and create my own sketches using the videos styles.

Guerilla advertising has influenced me in my design ideas, as it is unexpected and unconventional, consumers are targeted where they wouldn't be expecting, which makes the idea being marketed memorable. I have found a number of their advertisements on the internet and also I have found the book 'Guerrilla advertising: unconventional brand communication.' I like the advertisements in the underground stations such as the advertisement for Venture Communications in Toronto, which is being promoted in Toronto's underground by making a bench seem as though it is part of a skiing lift by having a digital picture behind the bench and on the floor in front, skis and snow.

Critical Analysis- Becks

I started by researching Becks website looking at there background and where and when it was first brewed, also I have looked there Fusions art & music page to get a feel for what they are looking for, my work must reflect the contemporary, vibrant, dynamic, and unexpected nature of the shared live experience. I have downloaded the Becks pack which contains the branding hierarchy, lifeform, formats, typography, tone of voice, color, animation and sound, outdoor and appendix to help me in my design.

I researched alcohol advertising and have found that it may not be aimed specifically at minors or, in particular, depict minors consuming these beverages; it cannot link the consumption of alcohol to enhanced physical performance or to driving; it cannot create the impression that the consumption of alcohol contributes towards social or sexual success; it cannot claim that alcohol has therapeutic qualities or that it is a stimulant, a sedative or a means of resolving personal conflicts; it cannot encourage immoderate consumption of alcohol or present abstinence or moderation in a negative light; it cannot place emphasis on high alcoholic content as being a positive quality of the beverages."

For comparative research I visited a number of supermarkets and taken pictures of Becks packaging and also other beer brand packaging such as Stella Artois, Budweiser, Fosters, Carling etc. I visited youtube and looked at Becks history of TV advertising in which they use catchy music that you would associate with Becks when you hear it. I have researched the website adsoftheworld.com and found many of Becks existing advertisements, and also other beer brands such as Heineken who also use music in some of there advertisements.

I have also found that Absolute Vodka have some interesting advertisements, I am interested in the 'In an Absolute World' campaign which has a likeness to the Guerilla style with a comedy side to the advert. Although they also have some existing advertising with vector illustration graphics around the bottle with a message like 'One swallow makes a summer.' This has lead me onto other brands that use vector graphics in their advertising, I like the coca cola advertising campaign 'The coke side of life' all of the advertisements are images that have been designed by leading artists and designers. They have all depicted their own interpretation of the 'Coke side of life' philosophy' and they are all colorful explosions of energy optimism and happiness. I have started to design my own sketches and collages inspired by the coke side of life campaign using musical images and come up with some interesting ideas. Finally i have experimented with Photoshop and Illustrator designing a vector of the Becks bottle, with which I plan to experiment with creating other musical vectors to surround the bottle in the fusions style.

Becks- Initial Ideas

I have experimented in Illustrator and Photoshop and started to made a vector of the Becks bottle. I am planning to experiment creating other musical vectors to surround the bottle in the 'Coke side of life' style also using photoshop brushes.

Becks- Absolute Vodka Advertisements

I have been researching Absolute Vodka advertisement, i have found that the 'In an Absolute World' advertising campaign is very similar to the Guerilla Advertising style. It shows many different scenes in everyday life and shows a change that shows the 'absolute world,' for example a power plant giving out bubbles instead of pollution.

Absolute Vodka also have advertisements using vector graphics around the bottle a bit like the coke style.

Becks- Initial Ideas

I like the advertising campaign by Coca cola 'live on the coke side of life' which is a collection of images that has been designed by leading artists and designers. They have all depicted their own interpretation of the coke side of life philosophy. The work of the artists reflects various styles, personalities and cultures, and all designs have one thing in common, they are colorful explosions of energy, optimism and happiness.

I have sketched my own ideas and made collages for the Becks advertisement
using the Coke design idea that visually dramatises the fusion of art and music:

Becks- TV Adverts

Here are some of the Becks adverts on television the first advert story is four different men, one a puppet, one animated, one claymation and the last one human. They all join together to perform a dance. The dance has only four moves and as they perform their dance in an alleyway a man walking his dog looks on curious. The advert ends with the message that there are only ever four steps, Barley, Water, Hops and Yeast to make Becks beer.
The second adverts message says 'The painters who said no to brushes,' 'The guys who said no to pop culture,' 'The car that said no to big,' 'The city that said no to sleep,' 'The man that said no to gravity,' and finally 'The beer that said no to compromise, no to anything except all natural ingredients.' The message is Becks is 'different by choice.'

Becks- Research

For over 20 years the Beck's bottle has been the canvas for some of the biggest names in contemporary art, including Royal College of Art graduates Tracey Emin and Jake and Dinos Chapman. This year they have worked with the RCA to give our emerging artists the chance to exhibit their artwork on Beck's Canvas and reach a huge audience.

Ministry of sound- Logo

Ministry of Sound Logo - British Symbolism

The crown on the Ministry of Sound logo symbolizes the British monument.
The middle part of the logo symbolizes a Port Cullis which are found on British castles.

The 'Ministry of Sound' type at the sides could symbolize te chains at the side of the Port Cullis or they could infact be made to look like a coat of arms...

The Crown, Port Cullis and Chains can also be found on a side of the one pence peace.

Ministry of sound- YCN Corporate Image Brief

I will create a exciting and innovative use of the logo, that will gain the maximum amount of attension and get across to people what a unique brand this is. I will experiment demonstrating how the existing logo can be applied to different environments and media spaces and try and make it as exciting and innovative as possible with an edgy urban vibe. Also how I can use the logo in different ways to create an interesting campaign.

The competitors of Ministry of Sound CD‘s are other well known compilation album companies such as ‘Now that’s what we call music. Other competitors include other companies that run clubnights and raves such as new companies like Vinyl Destination that started up in 2006 to Warner Music Group, EMI, Sony and Universal Music Group.
The comparitive research are advertising campaignes like Nike iD Reuters Sign R/GA, Adidas Impossible Bus Pull TBWA, Dentsu Tokoyo for J-Wave Radio Cmpaign, Saatchi and Saatchi CSI Advertising Campaign, Snow Plough/Triple Thick McDonald’s by Leo Burnett and Nike Speed Advertising Campaign by Ogilvy.

The audience I will be designing for is mainly aimed at young men and women around 16-34 that like listening to all different types of music genres such as dance, trance, drum and bass, funky house, chillout, garage, electro and many more as Ministry of Sound releases over 170 complitions and chart topping singles annually along with their own radio station, the paraphenalia such as CD’s, clothes and perfumes is aimed at low/middle class people. Also people who enjoy clubbing and socialising, as Ministry of Sound have many of their own venues.

Ministry of Sound have realised hundreds of album and single covers along with advertising campaigns, Ministry of Sound realized long ago that lighting has a positive draw, and the more impressive the better so all of their advertising are very bright and colorful and draw the eye of the audience. Some of there past designs are very simple but bright and eye catching whereas others are very vivid and use digital imagery. They have used many vector images and photography of women as sex sells, and the logo is always distinctively the main focus in the design and is a must in all advertisements from the Ministry of sound.

I intend to research the current different types of Ministry of Sound advertisement and also the history of their advertisement, i will look at their CD covers, postors, billboards, magazine spreads and also look at their website www.ministryofsound.com.
I will research Guerilla avertising as they have done a brand awareness campaign that is unusal and creative for Ministry of Sound that was based around their famous logo, I have found a book on Guerilla advertising and also others that I may be able to use in my project:

Guerrilla Advertising: Unconvertional Brand Communication by Gavin Lucas & Michael Dorrain; Building Strong Brands by Aaker; Logo Savvy: Top design firms share their naming and identity strategies; Branding by Mono Design; No Logo by Klein; Wally Ollin's on Brand by Ollins; The Brand Gap by Neumeiser; and Branding; Brand Strategy, Design and Implementation Of Corporate Product Identity.

Becks- YCN Packaging Design Brief

I will design packaging that visually dramatises the fusion of art and music for the use of all communication channels. The work must reflect the contemporary, vibrant, dynamic, and unexpected nature of the shared live experience. I will make it versatile enough to operate across a diverse range of communications channels and as the base for the campaignes visual identity for the next three years. Beck’s defines itself with its advertising creative platform of ‘Different By Choice‘ so my work will support, enchance and possibly incoroprate this message. I may also design an advertising campaign to go with the packaging design.

My comaparitive research will be other leading brands of beer such as Fostors, San Migel, Stella, Heineken, Carling, John Smiths, Budweiser, Kronenbourg 1664, etc. I will be looking at their different types of packaging, labelling and their website an compare it to Becks existing branding to establish the differences, and how Becks packaging could be improved. I will also study the existing Becks packaging and the history of their packaging.

The target audience is 18-34 year old men and women with a progressive, optimistic outlook and who value independent thought. Constant discovery and a hunger for fresh social experiences drives this group, wether that’s a club, gig, gallery or cinema. Becks always strive to challenge their audience and are unconstrianed in which beer brands typically operate. Becks should always communicate as an equal with its consumers.

Becks packaging consists of green glass bottles and cans with the silver, red and black logo. Becks also have a non-alcholic version which has a different coloured logo that is blue instead of red. They have a six pack of bottles which has a carboard holder that is folded around the bottles to keep them together, the larger packed of eighteen etc are contained in a large cardboard box. For over 20 years the Beck's bottle has been the canvas for some of the biggest names in contemporary art, including Royal College of Art graduates Tracey Emin and Jake and Dinos Chapman. From the 1st August four bottles where designed containing different artists work for limited time only. The current use of imagery on the bottles is the usual Beck’s logo. On the outer packaging the background is dark green with a picture of the top of a bottle in front of a light effect, and it has a large Beck’s logo underneath. The current design is very simple and uninteresting, and it needs to be made exciting to stand out from all the other leading brands.

I intend to research the different types of packaging there are for beer in the supermarkets by collecting examples and takeing pictures, and also look on the internet for existing becks beer packaging and the different types of packaging they have produced. I will look on their own website for ideas www.becks.co.uk. I will also look at other interesting websites I have found that specialises in packaging design www.itw-autosleeve.com/hicone-stretch-band.htm and www.brandpak.net/. I will research packaging design books to get ideas on interesting an usual packaging that I may be able to use, such as:
Special Packaging Designs by Agile Rabbit; 1000 Bags, tags and labels by Cullen; More Packaging Prototypes by Denison; The Designers Packaging Bible by Editors of Rotovision; The Packaging Design and Templates Book by Herriott; Packaging Design: Successful Product Branding, Concept to Shelf by Klimchuk; Packaging Design for Specific Consumer Groups by Stephenson; and Remember When by Opie.
